Foster Update!
Our family of 5 (with children ages 6, 4, and 3) has had the privilege of fostering Danny and Shep for the past couple of weeks.
This precious pair of pups stands out for their sweet temperament and very calm demeanor. Our children love to run and play with them outside, and they have plenty of energy for running and playing; they also love to snuggle up and relax for a large part of each day, and our children have used them as pillows on many occasions. Neither of these dogs exhibits the least bit of wild or out of control behaviorthey are a pleasure to have around and are very EASY.
These dogs are crate trainedthey will not mess in their crates. They still have a lot of puppy in them (meaning they like to chew or play tug of war with a freshly washed sock), so whenever we left the house, we crated them with a bone to chew on, and we never came home to an accident to clean.
Shep is a sweet dog who very readily follows commands (i.e. he goes right into the crate with minimal coaxing and is always happy to be rewarded for his cooperation with a treat). He is rather fond of his food, however, so whenever he is being fed, its best to feed him alone (i.e. he does not take kindly to other dogs trying to share his food). Once hes accustomed to his new surroundings (2-3 days), he can eat in the presence of other dogs, just keep an eye out.
Danny is also equally sweet, though he is a little more hesitant to follow commands at first (but in a good-natured way!), so he just drops to the ground and rolls over for you to scratch his belly, hoping to will you into changing your mind (i.e. we have to encourage him into his crate, but he does like being rewarded with a treat for going in!).
I cannot say enough how fabulous each of these dogs are with children! They are gentle, sweet, playful, and willing to be petted, play fetch, explore, run, and have all kinds of childlike fun! We traveled with them for the day to Blue Ridge, GA, and they were sweet and docile with every stranger they met. Both dogs are very calm travelers, though Shep is a little more nervous (perhaps not that used to car rides yet) and has a tendency to throw up a little bit, so you might want to travel with a towel underneath him for the first couple of trips.
For the most part, I would say that these dogs are both house-broken, although the first day or so in a new situation makes them more prone to accidents until they get over their jitters and feel secure in their new space, so keep an eye out and keep them in your sight until they are settled in.
If you adopt Danny and Shep, you will not be sorrythey are the perfect family pets and will bring lots of love into your home!
Danny and his brother Shep are adorable 1 year old Golden/Lab mixes. Unfortunately, we don't have a picture of Shep at the moment - but they are mirror images of one another - virtually identical in looks and personality too. They are young, fun loving and sweet tempered. They are well socialized and good with other dogs as a result of growing up with one another and suprisingly aren't particularly bonded. Both are eager to make new friends, human and canine alike and do so with ease. So come on by and introduce yourself - they look forward to meeting you!
